Watering
How often should I water my newly planted trees or shrubs?
It is important upon initial plantings to water daily for the first two weeks. Tree moats (little burms created around the root ball of the tree) are used to hold water in after initial plantings. A rule of thumb for trees is to use 5 gallons of water per caliper inch of tree that is planted. So, a two inch tree that is newly planted should get 10 gallons of water every day for the first two weeks. After that, watering can be cut back to 2-5 times a week.
How often should I water my established plants?
Fruit trees, with the exception of citrus, it is recommended to water once to twice a week. Nut, Shrubs, and Flowering trees also once to twice a week.
Fertilization
How often should I fertilize my plants?
Usually once a year is recommended on most fruit and nut trees.
When do I fertilize my plants?
Every plant is different in accordance to fertilization. Fruit and Nut trees do not need to be fertilized until after the first year of planting. This should be done in the early to mid spring depending upon your zone. A good rule of thumb is to wait until at least two weeks before the last full moon around Easter. This will insure that fertilizer does not push the plant to early.
